EDUCATION

Boyd House School

We provide education for residents of Child Safe (Midlands) via our independent school which is adjacent to one of our homes. It is a purpose built school accommodating up to 9 young persons' aged 11-17 years, who for a variety of reasons are unable to attend main stream education.

A range of educational options are available offering an array of opportunities for our young persons', this includes, for the more able the National Curriculum KS3/KS4 and for those whose education has been disrupted or they require remedial work and gradual re-orientation back into education, we provide a range of educational options through Cope Asdan Skills for Life etc.

In educational planning cognisance is taken of all aspects of the young persons' prior educational experiences. Assessments are undertaken educationally, psychologically and personally by our educational and psychological trained staff

As a consequence our educational strategies are "personalised" and are developed to meet the needs of each of our young persons'

We firmly believe that "success" breeds success and is fundamental in our approach. The educational programmes are structured to ensure that the pupils can, with support, guidance and application achieve a level of competence in their undertakings, the provision of an environment that is consistent and stimulating is also conducive in supporting the aspirations of the pupils.

Our educational staff are qualified experienced teachers who are committed, enthusiastic and imaginative and offer the young persons' a structured and organised educational experience. These qualities in our educational staff are essential if we are to deliver flexible education options in a sensitive, supportive pupil orientated way.

We also recognise the need to integrate where possible our educational objectives with the necessity of meeting the young persons' social and physical needs. Towards this end we provide a weekly programme under Asdan, of outdoor educational activities, planned and organised by an AALA trainer. These outdoor activities are relevant, interesting, stimulating and diverse, encouraging social inclusion and interaction as core factors.

Staff in the education department are ably supported by staff from the young persons' homes. They remain with the young persons' providing educational support, guidance and encouragement. All staff who accompany the young persons' are all attending or, are to attend a NVQ level 2 course as Classroom Teaching Assistants. This we believe is essential in ensuring not only informed additional support for the young persons' in school but, also of providing continuity of educational support between school and the young persons' home.

Educational staff are also supported by our in-house psychotherapists who in addition to their psychotherapy qualifications are also experienced qualified teachers and as such have a significant contribution to make in meeting the educational needs of the young person.

Child Safe (Midlands) is also a registered City & Guilds centre and as such we anticipate that additional learning opportunities can be provided for our young persons' and will offer further diversity to our educational ambitions.

We are also Defra registered and are developing teaching strategies through KS3 and Skills for Life of pursuing science through agriculture and horticulture aspects of the curriculum. The combined aims of care, therapy and education we think not only provide a planned stable and pupil orientated educational system, but also through it achievability improves the young persons' self-worth, self-esteem, providing them with a sense of achievement and hope.
